MAYA KILBURN

FIRST PLACE

VIOLIN

A native of Muncie Indiana, Maya Kilburn is 16 years old and currently studies with Mimi Zweig at the Indiana University Jacobs School String Academy. She began playing violin at age 4 working first with Anna Vayman and continuing with Chin Mi Kim. Maya has won numerous competitions at the regional and national level, recently winning the Indianapolis Symphony’s Maurer Young Artist Competition as well as the Louisville Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition. As a result, she has performed more than a dozen times as concerto soloist with many orchestras such as the Indianapolis Symphony, Southeast Missouri Symphony, Louisville Symphony, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Carmel Symphony, New World Youth Symphony, Muncie Symphony, and the Universidad Nationale Orchestra in San Jose, Costa Rica. She has been active performing and touring with the IU String Academy Violin Virtuosi. Highlights include two 3-week concert tours throughout Argentina and Chile, various performances at Circle Theatre in Indianapolis and the Indiana Landmarks Center, and opportunities to perform with such artists as David Chan, Atar Arad and Joseph Swenson. She has also performed in master class and lessons for renowned violinists such as Pamela Frank, Vadim Gluzman, Noah Bendix-Balgley, Jinjoo Cho, Henryk Kowalski, Mauricio Fuks, Richard Lin, and Sarah Kapustin. Maya has performed on many recitals in the Midwestern US, Japan, and Central America, and has been featured on both radio and television broadcasts. In the spring of both 2017 and 2018, she was a featured guest at the Universidad National de Costa Rica and the La Castella Arts School in San Jose, Costa Rica, where she performed recitals and taught masterclasses. Recent activities include performing for the 2nd time as a concerto soloist with both the Muncie Symphony and New World Youth Symphony, as well as performing across the US, Mexico, and Costa Rica. Maya attends Yorktown High School and enjoys hanging out with friends, reading, cooking, and spending time with her dogs Cocoa and Sophia.

NATHAN SHEPHERD

SECOND PLACE

BASSOON

Nathan Shepherd is a fourteen-year-old, homeschool student from Lanesville, Indiana. He began playing piano at the age of six and bassoon at 10. He studies bassoon with Matthew Karr, Roger Soren, and Francisco Joubert.

 

Nathan was a member of the 2019 National Youth Orchestra of the United States (NYO2), spending three weeks with other select high school musicians from across the country. NYO2 traveled to Miami to play a concert in the New World Center and finished the program with a final performance in Carnegie Hall. He has also been the principal bassoonist of the 2019 Indiana All-State Orchestra, Indiana Jr. All-State Band 2017-18, University of Louisville Wind Band Institute 2017-19, and traveled with the Kentucky Ambassadors of Music European tour in 2016 and 2018. He has also been selected to play in masterclasses for bassoonists such as Miles Maner, Andrew Bradey, and Ben Hoadley. Nathan looks forward to furthering his musical development on both of his instruments and is excited for what the future may hold!

CHRISTY KIM

THIRD PLACE

VIOLIN

Christy Kim goes to Mason Middle School and has been playing the violin for seven years. She has been a member of Starling Chamber Orchestra since the fall of 2016. Christy is a student of Prof. Kurt Sassmannshaus at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. She has been the concert master of the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Concert Orchestra from 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 season. Christy won the CSYO (Concert) 2018-19 Concerto Competition and performed the 1st movement of Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26, with the orchestra at the Cincinnati Music Hall in 2019. She has participated in the Cincinnati Young Artists Chamber Music Festival of 2017 and 2019, the Innsbrook 2018 Summer Institute of Music, and Bowdoin International Music Festival of 2019.
